Contaminantit is a general term used in science, policy, and industry to describe substances or agents found where they do not belong or at concentrations that compromise safety, quality, or function. Contaminants may arise from human activity, natural processes, or both, and can affect air, water, soil, food, or manufactured products. They are distinguished from normal constituents by their potential harm or undesired effects.

Common categories include chemical contaminants (heavy metals such as lead and mercury, pesticides, industrial solvents, PFAS, salts, additives), biological contaminants (pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, and their toxins), physical contaminants (debris, glass fragments, plastics, excessive particulates), and radiological contaminants (radionuclides). Regulatory authorities often set exposure limits and monitor contaminants in drinking water, foods, and consumer products.

Sources vary widely: industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, improper waste disposal, aging infrastructure, mining, atmospheric deposition, and natural leaching of minerals can introduce contaminants into the environment and materials.

Detection and management: Contamination is identified through sampling and analytical methods that quantify concentration relative to regulatory thresholds. Management strategies include prevention at the source, treatment (filtration, adsorption, chemical oxidation, disinfection), and remediation of contaminated media such as soil and groundwater. Monitoring programs help track contamination levels and validate remediation efforts.

Impact and regulation: Contaminants pose risks to human health, ecosystems, and product safety, prompting risk assessments, regulatory standards, monitoring, and, when needed, cleanup operations or recalls. Ongoing challenges include emerging contaminants, complex mixtures, and the need for cost-effective, scalable treatment and prevention strategies.
