Conformacions
Conformacions, in chemistry, refer to the different spatial arrangements of atoms in a molecule that can be interconverted by rotation about single bonds. These arrangements, or conformers, do not involve changes in the connectivity of atoms, distinguishing them from stereoisomers. The conformational landscape is determined by torsional angles and steric interactions, producing energy differences between conformers. At a given temperature, conformers populate according to their energies, described by the Boltzmann distribution.
In small molecules, conformations arise from rotation about single bonds. For example, ethane has staggered and
Cyclic systems also exhibit characteristic conformations. Cyclohexane, for instance, prefers a chair conformation, which minimizes steric
