The term signals the stair-step character of G versus gate voltage or bias that arises when individual transport channels turn on as the Fermi level crosses quantized energy levels.

Conceptually, conductanceaskeleia provides a dimensionless index that captures the discreteness of conductance steps beyond the average conductance value. In practice, researchers analyze low-temperature differential conductance dI/dV versus gate voltage, extract step heights ΔG_i, and gauge the sharpness of each transition.
