Comedogênico

Comedogênico refers to a substance or product's tendency to cause comedones, commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads. These are a type of acne lesion that forms when a pore becomes clogged with sebum (skin oil), dead skin cells, and sometimes bacteria. A product described as comedogenic means it has ingredients that are likely to contribute to this pore-clogging process.

The classification of a product as comedogenic is often based on its ingredients. Certain oils, emollients, and waxes are more prone to blocking pores than others. For example, some heavy oils like mineral oil or lanolin are frequently cited as potentially comedogenic. However, the comedogenic potential of a product can be complex and depends on the concentration of individual ingredients, the overall formulation, and how the product is used.

It's important to note that individual skin types and sensitivities vary greatly. A product that is comedogenic for one person may not cause any issues for another. Skincare professionals and dermatologists often recommend patch testing new products, especially for those with acne-prone or oily skin. Many cosmetic and skincare brands now offer "non-comedogenic" or "non-acnegenic" labels on their products, indicating they have been formulated to minimize the risk of pore blockage. However, these labels are not always regulated and can sometimes be marketing terms rather than strict scientific classifications.
