Clitichandling is an informal term used in linguistics and natural language processing to describe methods for identifying, segmenting, and analyzing clitics—morphological elements that attach to a host word but behave syntactically like independent words. The label appears most often in computational contexts where orthographic conventions, tokenization, and syntactic parsing must account for clitic forms.

Clitics can be enclitic (following a host) or proclitic (preceding a host) and are common in Romance, Slavic, and some Semitic languages. Handling them requires balancing morphological segmentation with syntactic analysis because clitics occupy a boundary between affix and free word. Common issues include clitic clustering, clitic climbing, and phonological assimilation that affect surface forms.

Approaches to clitichandling range from rule-based tokenizers and finite-state transducers that implement language-specific morphotactic rules, to machine-learning pipelines that jointly learn segmentation and tagging. Preprocessing strategies include orthographic normalization, explicit annotation of clitic boundaries, and creation of compound token representations for downstream parsers. Neural models may learn clitic behavior implicitly but can benefit from targeted training data or morphological features.

Clitichandling has practical implications for machine translation, speech recognition, syntactic parsing, and corpus annotation. Challenges include inconsistent orthography across corpora, low-resource languages, and interactions between morphology and syntax that complicate automatic analysis.
