Clinkerbuilt

Clinkerbuilt, or clinker-built, refers to a traditional hull construction method in which the longitudinal hull planks overlap along their edges, forming a lapstrake hull. The overlapping planks are fastened to a framework of transverse frames and stem and stern posts, typically with nails or rivets. The technique produces a hull that is relatively lightweight, strong, and flexible, properties that aid performance in rough seas and enable repairs to be made on the water.

Historically, clinker-built construction arose in Northern Europe and is closely associated with early medieval shipbuilding, including Viking ships. The method remained common through the medieval and into early modern periods across Britain, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and surrounding regions. The exterior hull surface displays a stepped line where the planks overlap, with planks often tapered toward the ends.

Compared with carvel construction, which lays planks edge to edge on a smooth internal frame, clinker-built hulls rely on overlapping boards that can be faster and simpler to assemble. However, clinker hulls can have less interior space and require careful shaping of planks to achieve a smooth external surface and watertight seams, especially on larger vessels. In modern times, clinker-built techniques are preserved by traditional craftsmen and used in replicas, wooden boats, and sport craft that emphasize historical authenticity.
