It is not an official rating system; the term appears in academic discussions and online debates as a way to discuss balancing subjective impressions with structured assessment.

A typical cinemagrade framework would assign an overall grade (for example, A through F or a 0–100 score) and also provide sub-scores for components such as narrative clarity, direction, acting, cinematography, editing, sound design, production design, and originality. Some proposals emphasize weighting that reflects a film’s genre or intent; others suggest a simplified rubric with fewer categories. In practice, discussions of cinemagrade often involve combining critical opinions, audience reaction, and craft indicators, though there is no single standardized method.

History and usage: The term gained traction in the late 2010s and early 2020s in scholarly and online forums as a thought experiment to articulate how different facets of filmmaking contribute to a film’s perceived quality.
