Ciganlija

Ada Ciganlija is a river island and peninsula on the Sava river in Belgrade, Serbia. It forms a large urban recreation area and is commonly referred to as Belgrade’s Sea due to its extensive beaches and a large artificial lake.

Name and location: The name Ada Ciganlija translates to Gypsy Island, reflecting historical Roma settlement on the site in the 19th century. The island lies on the left bank of the Sava and is connected to the city by roads and bridges, with a network of promenades and recreational facilities surrounding the lake.

Formation and development: In the mid-20th century the area was developed into a major recreation complex. The Sava was enclosed to create a substantial man-made lake that serves as Belgrade’s central site for swimming, water sports, and leisure. Since then the site has been expanded with beaches, sports venues, and amenities.

Facilities and activities: The central feature is the lake, used for swimming, windsurfing, sailing, and other water activities. Surrounding areas offer a network of cycling and running paths, tennis courts, football pitches, basketball courts, and outdoor fitness facilities. Numerous clubs provide water sports instruction and rentals. The complex also includes cafés, seasonal events, and venues for sports and cultural activities.

Access and administration: Ada Ciganlija is administered by the City of Belgrade and is accessible by public transport and road. It remains a major destination for residents and visitors, especially in summer, when its beaches and water activities are most popular.
