Chinoiseriedecoraties is a term used to describe decorative arts and architectural ornaments inspired by Chinese and broader East Asian visual culture as interpreted by European designers from the 17th through the 19th centuries. The term encompasses furniture, porcelain, wallpaper, textiles, metalwork, garden follies, and interior objects conceived in a fantasy “Chinese” or “Oriental” taste rather than in faithful replication of East Asian crafts.

Features include stylized landscapes with pagodas, bridges, and bamboo; depictions of dragons, phoenixes, scholars, and imagined scenes; the use of lacquer finishes, lacquered screens, blue-and-white porcelain motifs, gilt detailing, and bright color palettes. Motifs were often integrated with European forms, such as rococo scrollwork, chinoiserie silhouettes in wallpaper patterns, and porcelain-inspired ceramics with reproduction blue-and-white or famille patterns.

Historically, chinoiserie decoraties arose from increasing East–West trade and travel in the 17th century and peaked in the 18th century, especially in France, England, and the Dutch Republic. It reflected both genuine curiosity about Asia and Western fantasies, sometimes consolidating in maritime or garden pavilions and in fashionable interiors.

Reception and legacy: while popular in its era, it is now viewed as part of Orientalist trends that exoticized East Asian cultures. In contemporary design, scholars and designers often reinterpret chinoiserie elements with greater sensitivity, sometimes drawing on actual East Asian design vocabulary or recontextualizing motifs.
