Chatting is the informal exchange of information between people using digital communication channels. It typically refers to text, voice, or video conversations conducted interactively in real time or near real time, often through messaging apps, online platforms, or mobile services. Text chat uses short messages, abbreviations, and sometimes emoticons to convey meaning quickly, while voice and video chat add tonal cues and facial expressions.

Historically, online chatting began with text-based services such as bulletin board systems and IRC in the late 1980s, followed by consumer messaging programs in the 1990s and 2000s. The rise of smartphones and cloud services led to ubiquitous messaging apps that support one-to-one and group chats, file sharing, and multimedia features. Today, chat functions are integrated into social networks, collaboration tools, and customer support portals.

Chatting can be synchronous, with messages delivered and read in real time, or close to real time in group channels, or asynchronous in threaded conversations. Platforms vary in features such as end-to-end encryption, presence indicators, message history, and moderation controls.

Etiquette, privacy, and safety are important considerations; users should consider consent for sharing information, manage notifications, and employ available controls to report harassment or restrict access.

Uses of chatting span personal communication, professional collaboration, customer service, and online communities. It facilitates rapid information exchange, informal social interactions, and coordinated work, while presenting challenges such as potential miscommunication, privacy concerns, and the spread of misinformation. Effective chatting often relies on clear language, tone, and respect for others.
