The term emphasizes spread of distinctive attributes rather than mere quantity of individuals affected. The diffusion can follow continuous-time dynamics on manifolds or discrete-time processes on graphs, often governed by local interaction rules or diffusion kernels.

In graphs, characteristicsdiffusion is modeled using the graph Laplacian; given an initial vector of characteristic values, diffusion evolves as dX/dt = -L X, producing a smoothed version X(t) = e^{-tL} X(0). On networks with weighted edges, the diffusion rate depends on weights and topology. In continuous spaces, the diffusion equation ∂u/∂t = D ∇^2 u describes spread of a field of attribute values.
