Centella

Centella refers to a genus of flowering plants in the carrot family. The most widely known species is Centella asiatica, commonly called gotu kola or pennywort. The plants are low-growing, creeping herbs with round to kidney-shaped leaves and small white to pale green flowers arranged in umbrella-like inflorescences.

Centella species are native to tropical and subtropical regions and occur in parts of Asia, Africa, Madagascar, and the Americas. They grow in wetlands, marshy areas, and moist soils and are cultivated in many regions for medicinal and culinary use.

Centella asiatica leaves are edible and widely used in traditional medicine and as a culinary herb. The plant contains several bioactive compounds, notably triterpene saponins such as asiaticoside and madecassoside, along with aglycones (asiatic acid, madecassic acid), flavonoids, and phenolic compounds.

In pharmacology and traditional medicine, Centella is associated with wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Some clinical and preclinical studies report accelerated skin repair, reduced scarring, and cognitive benefits, but findings are variable and methodological limitations temper conclusions.

Safety and regulation: Centella products are generally well tolerated at recommended doses. Possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal upset or skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and those with liver disease or on medications should consult a healthcare professional before using Centella supplements or products.
