Cellblocks

Cellblocks, also known as prison blocks or wings, are distinct sections within a correctional facility designed to house inmates. These architectural divisions serve to organize and manage the prisoner population, often based on factors such as security level, offense type, or sentence length. Each cellblock typically contains a series of individual cells arranged along a corridor.

The layout of a cellblock is crucial for security and surveillance. Corridors are usually designed for clear lines of sight by correctional officers. Cells themselves are generally small, containing basic amenities like a bed, toilet, and sink. The number of cellblocks and their specific configurations vary greatly depending on the size and purpose of the prison. Some larger facilities may have multiple cellblocks, each with a unique designation and purpose, such as a maximum-security block, a minimum-security block, or a block for administrative segregation.

Within each cellblock, there are often common areas for recreation, dining, and programs, though access to these areas is typically supervised. The management of cellblocks involves a complex system of routines, including inmate counts, cell searches, and the movement of prisoners between their cells and other areas of the facility. The design and operation of cellblocks are fundamental to the functioning of any penal institution.
