Celldoping refers to the intentional alteration of biological cells through the introduction of exogenous substances, genetic modifications or physical stimuli to enhance or modify their physiological properties. The concept parallels doping in sports, where substances are used to gain an unfair advantage, but celldoping is applied at the cellular level for research, therapeutic, or biotechnological purposes.

Early examples of celldoping appeared in the 1980s and 1990s, when researchers added synthetic peptides or small molecules to cultured cells to up‑regulate antioxidant enzymes or to promote differentiation. In the 2000s the technique evolved with the advent of viral vectors and CRISPR/Cas9, allowing precise genome editing to insert, delete, or replace genes that confer desirable traits such as drug resistance or metabolic efficiency. Contemporary celldoping also explores non‑genetic modifications such as electroporation of nanoparticles, photostimulation, or mechanical stretching, all aimed at reprogramming cellular behavior.

Applications of celldoping are diverse. In medicine it is used to engineer stem cells that can persist longer or home more efficiently to injury sites, improving outcomes in regenerative therapies. In agriculture, modified plant cells enhance crop yield and resilience to stress. Industrial biotechnology leverages celldoped microbial cultures to increase production of enzymes, biofuels, and pharmaceuticals.

Regulatory oversight varies by jurisdiction. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration and the International Society for Stem Cell Research provide guidelines for celldoping in clinical contexts, whereas the European Union’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use reviews such interventions under its advanced therapy medicinal product regulations. Ethical debates focus on safety, equity, and the potential for misuse, prompting calls for transparent reporting and stringent pre‑clinical testing. Advances in celldoping continue to raise both promise and caution, demanding careful balance between innovation and responsibility.
