They are said to inhabit chambers with mineral formations, underground rivers, and hydrocarbon or mineral-seep pools, typically at depths where surface access is limited.

Biology and physiology descriptions vary, but common traits in many depictions include reduced or absent pigmentation, diminished or absent eyesight, and heightened non-visual senses such as touch or hearing. Some accounts assign pale or bluish skin, elongated limbs, and robust grasping ability for navigating narrow passages. Bioluminescent organs or symbiotic relationships with underground fungi are occasional features in fiction. Some fictional depictions present tool use and cave engineering, including mining or sculpture with mineral ore and bone. Communication is often described as echolocation-based or tactile.
