In the context of printing, ink cartridges are perhaps the most widely recognized example. Beyond printing, cartridges are employed in medical devices for dispensing medication, in electronic cigarettes for holding e-liquids, and in various industrial settings for lubricants, adhesives, or cleaning agents.

The design of a cartridge can vary significantly depending on its intended use. Factors such as material compatibility, pressure requirements, sealing mechanisms, and dispensing methods all influence the final form. Many cartridges are designed for single use, promoting ease of replacement and minimizing user contact with the contained substance. However, some reusable cartridge systems also exist, particularly in industrial applications, where they are refilled and reused to reduce waste and cost. The standardization of cartridge interfaces is also a significant factor, allowing for interoperability between different devices and manufacturers.
