Carnivoresconsumes is not a standard scientific term. Interpreted as the dietary behavior of carnivores, it refers to what these animals eat. Carnivores consume animal tissue as their primary source of energy and nutrients, obtained through predation or scavenging.

A carnivore is an organism whose diet consists mainly of meat. Within carnivory, two broad categories are recognized: obligate carnivores, which must obtain nutrients from animal tissue, and facultative carnivores, which rely primarily on meat but may supplement with other foods. Examples of obligate carnivores include many cats, some marine mammals, and certain birds of prey. Facultative carnivores include species such as dogs, foxes, and bears, which are capable of processing plant matter or other non-meat foods in addition to meat.

Carnivores consume a variety of prey types depending on their ecology. Common prey includes mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates such as insects. Some species specialize on a narrow prey base (for example, apex marine predators that focus on fish and squid), while others are generalist predators that hunt many kinds of animals. Scavenging also contributes to the diet of several carnivores, allowing them to exploit carrion when fresh prey is scarce.

Anatomical and physiological adaptations support carnivory. Carnivores typically have sharp teeth, including canines and carnassials, strong jaws, and digestive systems adapted to high-protein, high-fat diets. Shorter digestive tracts and high stomach acidity aid in processing animal tissue and neutralizing pathogens.

Ecological roles and interactions with prey species shape food webs. Carnivores influence population dynamics, drive prey behavior, and contribute to nutrient cycling through predation and scavenging.
