Travelers typically tow a caravan or drive a motorhome, gaining the flexibility to change locations while retaining home-like living space. The term originated with towable caravans in the early 20th century and has since broadened to include various self-contained and vehicle-mounted living units.

Equipment and options: Caravans are towable trailers that provide sleeping and living space and require a towing vehicle. Motorhomes integrate the driving cab with living quarters. Campervans are compact, self-contained vans designed for travel, while trailer tents and hybrid designs offer lighter alternatives. Accommodation is usually at caravan parks, campsites, or designated areas with basic services such as electricity, water, and waste disposal.

Practice and culture: Caravanning emphasizes mobility and the ability to stay in different places for short breaks or longer trips. Route planning, reservations, and seasonal timing are common, as are joining clubs or associations that offer insurance, maintenance advice, and member discounts. Environmental considerations include fuel use, waste management, and responsible camping practices.

History and regulation: Caravanning expanded in the UK and North America during the 1910s–1930s and grew with postwar mass production. In many countries, regulatory frameworks cover vehicle and caravan registration, licensing for towing, safety standards, and campsite rules. Safety concerns center on weight, hitching, braking, and complying with local traffic laws.
