Capulus

Capulus refers to a genus of fungi belonging to the family Capulaceae. These fungi are typically small to medium in size, with a cap that is often funnel-shaped or cup-shaped, hence the genus name which derives from the Latin word for "cup." The cap surface can vary in texture, appearing smooth, scaly, or velvety, and its color can range from white and pale yellow to brown and reddish-brown depending on the species.

The stem, or stipe, of capulus fungi is generally slender and often hollow, though some species may have a solid stipe. It is usually attached centrally to the underside of the cap. The gills, which are the spore-producing structures, are typically decurrent, meaning they run down the length of the stipe. These gills can be white, cream, or yellowish.

Capulus species are saprobic, meaning they obtain nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter. They are commonly found growing on decaying wood, leaf litter, or soil in forests and woodlands. While some species may be edible, many are not well-studied for their culinary potential, and identification can be challenging, making it advisable to avoid consumption unless positively identified by an expert.
