Cantileversnapfit refers to a type of snap-fit joint that uses a cantilevered beam to provide a compliant latching action between two parts. The cantilever element deflects during assembly and snaps into a receiving feature to retain the parts without external fasteners.

In practice, cantileversnapfits are commonly used in plastic housings. A thin cantilever tab on one part bends to clear an opening and then snaps past a rim or undercut, where it continues to apply retention force. Design parameters include material modulus, wall thickness, cantilever length, notch geometry, radii, and the clearances at mating interfaces.

Advantages include simplicity, rapid assembly, and the ability to snap parts with close tolerances. It reduces the need for screws or adhesives and supports automation. Limitations include limited load-bearing capacity, potential fatigue and creep under prolonged loading, and sensitivity to temperature and humidity. Contact surfaces may wear over repeated cycles.
