This method is analogous to canaries in coal mines, where miners would bring canaries to detect toxic gases. If the canary became ill, miners knew the air was unsafe and would evacuate.

In a canary implementation, a new version of the software is deployed to a small group of servers or users. This group is often referred to as the "canary group." The performance and stability of the new version are closely monitored within this group. Key metrics such as error rates, response times, and resource utilization are tracked.

If the new version performs as expected and no significant issues are detected in the canary group, the deployment is gradually expanded. More servers or users are then updated to the new version. This process continues in stages until the entire user base is running the new software.

Conversely, if the canary deployment reveals problems, such as increased error rates or performance degradation, the rollout is halted. The new version can then be rolled back to the previous stable version, or developers can quickly address the issues before proceeding with further deployment. This staged approach minimizes the impact of potential bugs or regressions on the overall user base. Canary implementations are a valuable technique for improving the reliability and safety of software updates.
