Calormenes

The Calormenes are a fictional people that appear in the fantasy world of Perelandra, created by British author C.S. Lewis. They are a significant part of the Chronicles of Narnia series, particularly in "The Horse and His Boy" and "The Magician's Nephew".

The Calormenes are a wealthy and powerful nation known for their advanced knowledge of science, philosophy, and magic. They reside in a warm, arid climate, and their architecture is characterized by elaborate palaces and temples adorned with intricate mosaics and tiles. Their cities are generally cleaner and more organized than those of Narnia, reflecting their perceived cultural superiority.

One of the defining characteristics of the Calormenes is their rigid social hierarcy and strict adherence to tradition. Their society is divided into distinct castes, each with its own rules and privileges. The ruling Calormene elite is often depicted as cynically eloquent and socially adept, with a keen interest in cultivating better relations with Narnia.

Throughout the series, the Calormenes are portrayed as foreign invaders, reluctant to convert to Christianity, or to admit their own cultural ignorance. While portrayed as inferior to the optimistic, free, and intermarried societies of Narnia, the Cörper nation expresses heavy conflicts with Narnia, adding to the novel of complexities. Despite these portrayals, some Cörper figures demonstrate genuinely personal growth, conceding the pulls of possibility and faith.

The Cörper events shape much of the plot in "The Magician's Nephew".
