Calciumnitrit

Calcium nitrite, with the chemical formula Ca(NO2)2, is an inorganic salt composed of calcium ions and nitrite (NO2−) ions. It is the calcium salt of nitrous acid and is used primarily for industrial applications rather than as a consumer chemical.

Physically, calcium nitrite typically appears as a white to pale solid that is soluble in water. In aqueous solutions, it is in equilibrium with nitrous acid (HNO2) and nitrite ions, and under acidic conditions nitrous acid can decompose to nitrogen oxides. The compound is generally handled as a solid or as an aqueous solution depending on the application.

Production and suppliers commonly obtain calcium nitrite by reacting calcium-containing compounds with nitrite sources under controlled conditions to form the Ca(NO2)2 salt. It is distributed commercially for industrial use, often in solid form or as concentrated aqueous solutions.

Uses and applications are dominated by corrosion inhibition in reinforced concrete. When added to concrete mixtures, calcium nitrite migrates to the reinforcement interface and helps form a protective nitrite-related environment that reduces the rate of corrosion of steel embedded in concrete, particularly in chloride-rich conditions. Beyond construction, it is also employed as a source of nitrite in some chemical synthesis and laboratory applications, though these uses are more specialized.

Safety and handling: Calcium nitrite is an oxidizing salt and can intensify combustion of organic materials. It is toxic if swallowed and can cause methemoglobinemia. It can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It should be stored in a cool, dry place away from acids, organic materials, and incompatibles, with appropriate personal protective equipment during handling. Spills should be contained and cleaned according to local regulations. Environmental considerations include potential toxicity to aquatic life, so releases to water bodies should be avoided.
