In rocks and mineral deposits, the term often signals an evaporite- or hydrothermal-influenced history, where chlorine-bearing species such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or magnesium chloride are abundant. In water and soils, chloriderich indicates high salinity specifically dominated by chloride ions, usually relative to regional baselines for non-saline conditions.

Natural and anthropogenic occurrences drive chloriderich conditions. In arid and coastal regions, long-lasting evaporation or seawater intrusion concentrates chloride in groundwater and surface waters. Dissolution of existing evaporite deposits (halite, carnallite, sylvite) by groundwater or tectonic fluids can also produce chloriderich environments. Human activities, such as application of road salts, mining brines, wastewater discharge, and industrial processing, can elevate chloride levels in streams, soils, and shallow aquifers, sometimes creating persistent chloriderich zones beyond natural baselines.

Thresholds for labeling a system chloriderich vary by region, but concentrations around or above 1000 mg/L are commonly described as chloriderich in hydrological studies. High chloride content affects corrosion of infrastructure, soil salinity and crop tolerance in agriculture, and the mineralogy of rocks and brines. In mineral exploration and industrial chemistry, chloriderich brines are important sources for evaporite and potash-related deposits.
