A CTundersökning, commonly known as a computed tomography (CT) scan, is a type of imaging test that uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. This non-invasive procedure is widely used in medical diagnostics to examine internal structures such as bones, blood vessels, soft tissues, and organs. The technology behind a CT scan involves rotating X-ray equipment around the patient, capturing multiple images from different angles, which are then processed by a computer to generate detailed cross-sectional slices.

CT scans are particularly valuable for identifying abnormalities such as tumors, blood clots, organ damage, or fractures. They are often employed in emergency situations, such as assessing trauma patients or detecting strokes, due to their speed and precision. The procedure typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and the complexity of the examination. Patients may be asked to lie still on a sliding table that moves through the CT scanner, which resembles a large doughnut-shaped machine.

Before the scan, patients may be required to remove metal objects, such as jewelry or clothing with zippers, as these can interfere with the imaging process. In some cases, contrast agents—either oral or intravenous—may be used to enhance visibility of certain structures, such as blood vessels or organs. While CT scans expose patients to ionizing radiation, the dose is generally low and considered safe for most individuals. However, precautions are taken to minimize exposure, especially for pregnant women or children.

The results of a CT scan are reviewed by a radiologist, who interprets the images and provides a detailed report for the referring physician. This imaging modality plays a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of medical conditions, contributing significantly to modern healthcare diagnostics.
