It encompasses a wide range of processes, including neural signaling, synaptic transmission, and overall brain and spinal cord function. Understanding CNS activity is crucial for diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, as well as for research into cognitive processes, behavior, and consciousness.

Methods for measuring CNS activity vary significantly. Electrophysiological techniques, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), detect the electrical and magnetic fields produced by neuronal activity, respectively. These methods offer excellent temporal resolution, capturing rapid changes in brain function.
