CDO

CDO is an acronym with several meanings, but it most commonly refers to Chief Data Officer and Collateralized Debt Obligation. The term can also denote other roles in some organizations, such as Chief Digital Officer, depending on context.

Chief Data Officer

A Chief Data Officer is a senior executive responsible for an organization’s data strategy and governance. Collateralized Debt Obligation

A Collateralized Debt Obligation is a structured financial instrument that pools debt securities—such as mortgages and corporate loans—and issues new securities backed by the pool’s cash flows. An SPV or special purpose vehicle holds the assets and issues tranches to investors, each with different levels of priority and risk. Cash flows are distributed through a waterfall structure, with senior tranches typically receiving payments first and equity or junior tranches absorbing losses. CDOs aim to transform illiquid assets into traded securities and to tailor risk/return profiles. They gained notoriety during the 2007–2008 financial crisis for their complexity, opacity, and role in risk transmission, leading to regulatory reforms focused on disclosure, capital requirements, and risk retention.
