Bølgepap

Bølgepap, commonly known as corrugated cardboard, is a paper-based packaging material consisting of a central corrugated sheet (fluting) sandwiched between two flat linerboards. The combination yields a lightweight yet strong material suitable for packaging and shipping. Corrugated boards are produced in several wall configurations: single-wall, double-wall, and triple-wall. They use various flute profiles, including A, B, C, and E; A flutes are thick with high cushioning, while E flutes are thin and optimized for printing.

Manufacture involves corrugating the flute with heat and bonding it to the liners using adhesives, typically starch-based or synthetic. The properties depend on flute profile, liner quality, and moisture content. Corrugated boards can be printed and finished with coatings, and are generally recyclable and widely accepted by recycling streams. They are also often manufactured from a high proportion of recycled fiber.

Uses include shipping boxes, product packaging, point-of-purchase displays, and protective inserts. In packaging design, the choice of wall configuration and flute type affects strength, weight, and cost. Environmental considerations emphasize recyclability and reuse, though coatings or food residues can hinder recycling.

History: Corrugated cardboard emerged in the late 19th century and gained broad commercial use in the 20th century, becoming a dominant packaging material worldwide.
