Butt welds are commonly used for tubulars, plates, and structural components because they provide high strength with relatively simple preparation.

Preparation and fit-up are critical for a sound butt weld. Edges are cleaned, beveled if required by thickness, and the pieces are aligned precisely. A root gap is often used to ensure proper fusion at the joint root, while fillers are used to complete the seam. Proper fit-up minimizes distortion and ensures penetrative fusion throughout the joint.

Any of several welding processes can be used for buttweldsveising, including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), and submerged arc welding (SAW). The choice depends on material, thickness, production rate, and required weld quality. Welding sequences and heat input are planned to control distortion and mechanical properties.

Quality assurance typically involves visual inspection, nondestructive testing (such as ultrasonics or radiography), and documentation of welding procedure specifications (WPS) and qualification records (PQR). Standards and codes—such as AWS, ASME, or ISO—define acceptance criteria and procedural requirements.
