Buselaphus

Buselaphus is a genus of antelopes found in Africa. The genus name is derived from the Greek words "bus" meaning ox and "elaphos" meaning deer, reflecting their somewhat ox-like build and deer-like appearance. The most well-known species within this genus is the common wildebeest, Buselaphus gnu, also known as the blue wildebeest or brindled gnu. Another species, though sometimes debated in its classification, is the black wildebeest, Buselaphus caama.

These large herbivores are characterized by their shaggy manes, distinctive horns that curve outwards and downwards, and a somewhat comical gait. They are primarily grazers, feeding on grasses, and are often found in large herds, particularly during their annual migrations. These migrations, especially that of the common wildebeest, are one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the African continent, involving millions of animals moving across vast plains in search of fresh grazing and water.

Buselaphus species are social animals and play a significant role in the African savanna ecosystem. They are prey for a variety of predators, including lions, hyenas, and wild dogs. Their grazing habits also influence vegetation patterns, and their dung contributes to nutrient cycling. Despite their widespread presence, populations of some Buselaphus species have faced pressures from habitat loss and hunting.
