Buddhisteja refers to the followers of Buddhism, a spiritual and philosophical tradition that originated in ancient India over 2,500 years ago. The term encompasses a diverse range of individuals who adhere to the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as the Buddha, who is believed to have attained enlightenment and subsequently shared his insights on the nature of suffering, the path to liberation, and the principles of ethical living.

Buddhism is not a single unified religion but rather a collection of traditions, schools, and practices that share core philosophical concepts. These include the Four Noble Truths—suffering exists, suffering arises from attachment, suffering can cease, and the Eightfold Path provides the way to end suffering—and the concept of karma, which describes the law of cause and effect governing actions and their consequences. Buddhists seek to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and mindfulness to achieve inner peace and enlightenment, known as *nirvana* or *liberation*.

Buddhism has spread across Asia and beyond, evolving into various branches such as Theravāda, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna. Each tradition emphasizes different aspects of the Buddha’s teachings while maintaining a common foundation. Theravāda, predominant in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar, focuses on the original teachings and monastic discipline, while Mahāyāna, widespread in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, introduces concepts like the Bodhisattva ideal—devoting oneself to the enlightenment of all beings. Vajrayāna, primarily found in Tibet and Mongolia, incorporates esoteric practices and visualization techniques.

Buddhists practice meditation, ethical conduct, and study of scriptures to develop insight and compassion. The tradition also includes a wide array of cultural and ritual practices, such as festivals, temple visits, and offerings, which vary by region and school. While Buddhism does not prescribe a single set of beliefs about the afterlife, many traditions teach rebirth based on karma until enlightenment is attained.

Today, Buddhism continues to influence global spirituality, offering tools for personal growth, mental well-being, and social harmony. Its principles have gained popularity in secular contexts, particularly through mindfulness and meditation practices, which are increasingly integrated into modern lifestyles.
