Bryopsidales

Bryopsidales is an order of green algae, belonging to the class Ulvophyceae. These algae are characterized by their filamentous, siphonous structure, meaning their thallus is not divided into cells but instead consists of a continuous, multinucleate cytoplasm. This siphonous organization is a defining feature of many members of this order.

The thallus of Bryopsidales can exhibit diverse forms, ranging from simple branching filaments to more complex structures resembling leaves, stems, or even small trees. Reproduction in Bryopsidales can be asexual, through fragmentation or zoospores, and sexual, involving the fusion of gametes. Many species are marine, found in tropical and subtropical waters, often growing on rocky substrates or as epiphytes on other marine organisms. Some genera, such as Halimeda and Udotea, are known for their ability to calcify, incorporating calcium carbonate into their thalli, which contributes to the formation of marine sediments and reef structures. Other well-known genera include Caulerpa, with its distinctive stolons and erect fronds, and Bryopsis, which typically has feathery or fern-like branches. The ecological roles of Bryopsidales vary, with some species serving as primary producers and providing habitat for small invertebrates, while others can become invasive and impact local ecosystems.
