When a sample contains such unsaturation, the bromine reagent is consumed, and the reddish-brown color of Br2 fades or disappears in the solution. Saturated hydrocarbons typically show little or no decolorization.

Procedure: A small amount of the sample is treated with a bromine solution, commonly bromine in an organic solvent such as carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. The mixture is observed for a color change within a short time.
