Bremsesignal

Bremsesignal is a term used mainly in German-language automotive literature to describe the signaling that communicates when a vehicle is braking. The word derives from Bremsen (to brake) and Signal (signal). In practice, it refers to the brake signal generated by the braking system and conveyed to other road users and onboard systems.

In road vehicles, the bremsesignal is typically produced by a brake light switch that activates the rear brake lamps whenever the brake pedal is pressed or braking force is applied. The signal serves two primary purposes: alerting drivers behind the vehicle to decelerate, and informing on-board systems and controllers—such as ABS, ESC, traction control, and ADAS—about braking action.

Modern vehicles often transmit braking status over vehicle networks (CAN, LIN) to digital controllers and instrument clusters. Brake lights may use LED arrays for faster response and higher visibility. In some designs, additional signals indicate rapid or emergency braking, or deceleration level, to improve safety and support advanced driving systems or V2X communications.

Regulatory requirements generally mandate that bremsesignal be clearly visible, use standardized color (red) and intensity, and function reliably under various conditions. The concept is closely related to the standard brake light in most countries, and is sometimes discussed alongside related braking indicators and signals in traffic engineering.
