Bowland

Bowland, known as the Forest of Bowland, is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the north of England. It straddles Lancashire and North Yorkshire, with most upland terrain in the Ribble Valley area and a smaller portion to the north and east. The AONB covers about 312 square miles (809 square kilometers). It was designated in 1964 to safeguard the landscape, tranquillity, and traditional farming that define the region.

Geographically, Bowland is a remote upland landscape of limestone and gritstone fells, peat moorland, and scattered farms. The Trough of Bowland is a notable glacial valley cutting through the hills. Much of the land is used for grazing with a network of lanes, bridleways, and footpaths that allow access for walkers and riders, while large tracts remain privately owned.

Ecologically, the area contains several Sites of Special Scientific Interest and supports upland habitats such as heath, bog, and grassland. It is home to a range of birds and mammals typical of northern uplands, and peat bogs play a key role in carbon storage. Conservation work is coordinated by the Bowland AONB Partnership in collaboration with local authorities, landowners, and communities.

Economy and culture: Farming, especially sheep grazing, underpins the rural economy, complemented by outdoor recreation and tourism. The name Bowland appears in place names and historical records; the term reflects its long-standing association with the upland landscape rather than dense woodland.
