It encompasses both on-the-ground enforcement and the use of data systems that link border agencies across jurisdictions.

It combines physical measures such as fences and patrols with technological assets including sensors (radar, infrared, seismic), cameras, drones, and maritime patrols. At points of entry, biometric verification, identity checks, and automated data sharing with immigration, customs, and law enforcement networks are commonly employed to assess risk and speed processing.

Border operations typically involve risk-based screening, primary and secondary inspections, interception of prohibited items, and onward processing or return where appropriate. Border surveillance data are used to prioritize resources, support asylum and protection procedures, and coordinate cooperation with neighboring states through legal instruments and information exchanges, while maintaining respect for due process.
