Boldogulás

Boldogulás is a Hungarian term describing the process by which a person makes progress in life, manages daily needs, and gains stability and social standing. It is commonly used to refer to the ability to obtain and maintain work, earn an adequate income, access education and housing, maintain health, and participate in social life. It is distinct from boldogság, which denotes subjective happiness, whereas boldogulás emphasizes practical success and functioning within social structures.

Etymology: the word derives from boldog (happy) with the nominal suffix -ulás, indicating an action or process; in modern usage, it denotes the act of getting by or making progress rather than the state of happiness itself.

In sociology and public policy, boldogulás covers economic, educational, health, and social dimensions of life. It reflects both individual capital (skills, education, health) and structural conditions (labor market prospects, regional disparities, discrimination, family background). Researchers speak of boldogulási esélyek (opportunities for making headway) and of intergenerational mobility.

Measurement of boldogulás relies on indicators such as employment status and income level, educational attainment, housing quality, health, and social participation. Because it is a broad, value-laden concept, comparisons across contexts require careful specification of what is being measured and which normative benchmarks are used.
