Bogengestell

Bogengestell is a German architectural term that designates the underlying framework of a row of arches, effectively the structural skeleton of an arcade. It refers to the system of vertical supports and horizontal members that organize and carry the openings, emphasizing the frame that holds the arches together rather than the arches alone.

Etymology and relation to related terms: the word combines Bogen (arch) with Gestell (frame or stand). In practice, Bogengestell is closely related to concepts such as Arkade or Arkadengang, which describe the arcade as a whole; Bogengestell specifically highlights the supporting framework within which the arches are arranged.

Construction, materials and form: a Bogengestell typically comprises vertical supports—columns, pillars, or pilasters—connected by horizontal members that form successive openings. Materials commonly used include cut stone, brick, and timber. Arches within the frame can be semicircular (Romanesque) or pointed (Gothic), influencing the overall appearance and structural behavior. The frame may be integrated into the building wall or stand as a freestanding arcade within a courtyard or cloister.
