Boffer

A boffer is a blunt, padded weapon used primarily in live-action role-playing (LARP) and in stage combat to simulate melee weapons while reducing the risk of injury. It typically consists of a central core, such as a wooden dowel or a PVC pipe, surrounded by foam padding and covered with a durable fabric sleeve or vinyl.

Construction commonly involves a rigid core for structure, a high-density foam striking surface, and a soft outer cover. The foam is usually EVA or another closed-cell material designed to compress on impact. Outer material can be nylon, canvas, or vinyl, and many designs include a protective cap at the tip. Lengths and weights vary by weapon type, with swords, spears, and other axes or maces available in different sizes to suit performers and scenes.

Design and safety features emphasize impact absorption and the absence of rigid, dangerous elements. Typical boffers have padded tips and guards, and the core is securely enclosed to prevent injury from protruding parts. Event safety guidelines often require regular inspections of padding integrity, secure mounting of components, and adherence to distance and contact rules during scenes.

Usage and culture: Boffer weapons are common in LARP games, theater productions, and training environments where safe rehearsal of combat is needed. Players customize boffers with faction colors or emblems, and communities develop varying standards for construction and safety.

Maintenance: Regular checks for foam compression, tears, and fabric wear are recommended. Damaged padding should be replaced, and the outer cover washed and dried according to materials to maintain hygiene and longevity.
