In Dutch-speaking contexts, bloemkunst is closely related to bloemschikken (flower arranging) and encompasses a wide range of styles, techniques, and materials. Common goals in bloemkunst include balance, rhythm, harmony, proportion, and emphasis on a focal flower or element.

Materials and techniques: Arrangements can be designed in contemporary, traditional, or abstract styles. Designers work with containers such as vases, bowls, and jars, and may use floral foam, wires, or other mechanics to support stems.
