Blankets

A blanket is a large, flat textile designed to provide warmth. It is typically rectangular and used on beds, over couches, or during travel. Unlike duvets or comforters, blankets usually consist of a single layer of fabric or knit without a built-in filling. They come in a range of weights, textures, and finishes to suit seasonal needs and personal preference.

Blankets are made from natural fibers such as wool, cotton, alpaca, or mohair, and from synthetic fibers such as polyester, acrylic, or blends. Wool blankets are valued for warmth and breathability, cotton for softness and washability, and fleece or acrylic for affordability and easy care. Some blankets incorporate a heating element and are marketed as electric blankets.

In addition to standard bed blankets, products include throws (smaller decorative blankets), afghans or crochet/knit blankets, baby blankets, travel blankets, and weighted blankets. Size conventions vary by region, with common bed sizes including twin, full/queen, and king; throws are typically about 50 by 60 inches.

Blankets provide warmth, can serve as bedding layering, and are used for décor or travel comfort. Care varies by material; many blankets are machine washable, but some require dry cleaning or gentle hand wash. Follow label instructions; avoid high heat during washing and drying to prevent shrinking or damage. Storage in a cool, dry place helps prevent mildew.

Historically, blankets have been woven from wool and other fibers for centuries, with diverse cultural traditions. Modern blankets are manufactured worldwide and may be subject to safety standards for products such as electric blankets, including electrical insulation and heat regulation.
