Björkenia
Björkenia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Orchidaceae, commonly known as the lady's slippers. These terrestrial orchids are native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with a distribution that spans across Europe, Asia, and North America. The genus is characterized by its distinctive slipper-shaped labellum, which serves as a trap for visiting insects, primarily bees. Pollination occurs when insects enter the pouch of the labellum and are forced to exit through a narrow slit, picking up or depositing pollen in the process.
Björkenia species are typically perennial herbs with a rhizomatous root system. They produce a single flower
The genus Björkenia was first described by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in his seminal work Systema Naturae
