Biofilmit

Biofilmit, commonly referred to in English as a biofilm, is a structured community of microorganisms attached to a surface and embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix. This mode of growth enables close interactions among diverse species and provides protection from environmental stresses, including desiccation, shear forces, and antimicrobial agents.

Formation and architecture occur through stages. Microorganisms first attach reversibly to a surface, then achieve irreversible adhesion aided by adhesins and EPS production. Over time, the community matures into a three-dimensional structure with water channels that facilitate nutrient and waste transport. The composition often includes bacteria and fungi, and can encompass archaea and algae, all enclosed in EPS composed of polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. Cells within biofilmit frequently enter altered metabolic states, contributing to resilience and persistence.

Ecology and impact span natural and human-made environments. Biofilmit are common in aquatic systems, soils, and on living and nonliving surfaces. In industry, they cause biofouling, corrosion, and clogging in pipelines and equipment. In healthcare, biofilmit contribute to chronic infections and device-associated infections, as their tolerance to antibiotics and disinfectants is enhanced by the protective matrix and slow-growing subpopulations.

Detection and control rely on a combination of tools and strategies. Microscopy and staining (for example, confocal laser scanning or electron microscopy) and molecular methods are used for identification. Management includes mechanical cleaning, chemical disinfectants, enzymatic treatments that degrade EPS, and strategies to prevent formation, such as anti-biofilm coatings and disruption of signaling pathways.
