The process typically begins with pre-production: concept development, target audience, script or storyboard, shot list, budgeting, sourcing locations and talent, permissions, and scheduling. Production follows, involving camera work, lighting, sound recording, and direction to capture the planned material. Post-production encompasses editing, color grading, sound design, motion graphics, and visual effects, followed by mastering and format conversion for distribution. Depending on the project, delivery may include media archiving and rights management.

Common fields include commercial advertising, feature films and television, corporate communications, documentary and news, events, and stock imagery. Key roles include producers, directors, cinematographers, art directors, editors, colorists, sound designers, and visual effects artists, as well as assistants and technicians for lighting, grip, and set design.
