Bierstijl refers to a classification system used to categorize different types of beer. These styles are defined by a combination of factors including ingredients, brewing methods, flavor profiles, aroma, color, and historical origins. Understanding bierstijlen helps brewers create consistent products and consumers choose beers that suit their preferences.

Common elements that differentiate bierstijlen include the type of malt used, the presence and type of hops, the yeast strain employed, and the fermentation temperature. For example, ales and lagers are two broad categories distinguished by their fermentation process, with ales fermenting at warmer temperatures and lagers at cooler ones. Within these categories, further distinctions are made.

Examples of distinct bierstijlen include IPAs (India Pale Ales), known for their hop bitterness and aroma; Stouts, which are dark and often have roasted or chocolatey flavors; Pilsners, a pale lager characterized by its crispness and hop presence; and Wheat Beers (like Hefeweizen), which often exhibit fruity or spicy notes derived from the wheat and yeast. The Craft Beer movement has led to a proliferation of new and nuanced styles, often drawing inspiration from traditional categories but with unique twists.
