This process is not simply a passive reception of sound but an active construction of meaning, influenced by various factors.

The perception of speech begins with the auditory system processing the acoustic properties of the sound wave, such as frequency, intensity, and temporal variations. These raw acoustic features are then mapped onto phonetic representations. This mapping is not one-to-one due to the inherent variability in speech production, including differences in speaker characteristics, speaking rate, and accent. To overcome these challenges, speech perception relies heavily on top-down processing.
