Besucherausweis

Besucherausweis is a credential used to identify and authorize visitors in a facility. It serves to distinguish non-employee persons and to control access to buildings and restricted areas. Typical environments include offices, industrial sites, hospitals, government buildings and events.

Issuance and procedures are usually managed at the reception or by security staff. The visitor registers, provides the name of the host, purpose of the visit and, in some cases, additional data. The host confirms the appointment or authorization. Depending on the organization, the visitor may be required to present an identity document and a photo may be taken. The badge may be valid only for a specific time window and is returned or collected upon departure.

A visitor badge generally contains the visitor’s name, the organization they represent, the visit purpose, date and time, and sometimes access levels or assigned zones. Design elements such as color coding, logos, or barcodes/QR codes are used to indicate permissions and to facilitate electronic logging of entries and exits.

Security and privacy considerations include wearing the badge visibly and using it as part of the site’s access control. It should not be lent to others, and it is usually logged for security and safety purposes. Data protection rules apply to the collected information, with retention and handling governed by internal policies and applicable law. Depending on the facility, visitors may be escorted or required to follow directed routes.

Formats vary from physical plastic or paper passes to digital versions on smartphones, and some systems combine the badge with temporary access tokens or Wi-Fi credentials.
