Beräkningsmaskin

Beräkningsmaskin is a Swedish term for a device capable of carrying out calculations and data processing through mechanical, electrical, or electronic means. The word literally means calculation machine and is used historically to describe a wide range of devices, from early calculating machines to modern computers. In contemporary Swedish, dator is the common everyday term for a computer, while beräkningsmaskin is more often found in historical or formal contexts.

Historically, beräkningsmaskiner cover the evolution from mechanical calculators to electronic and programmable machines. In the 17th and 18th centuries, mechanical devices such as Pascal’s calculator and Leibniz’s stepped reckoner laid the groundwork for automated calculation. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, electromechanical and tabulating machines extended data processing for business and science, exemplified by devices used in census work and accounting. The 1940s saw electronic beräkningsmaskiner with stored-program capabilities, such as Konrad Zuse’s Z3 and later machines like ENIAC, which established the broader concept of general-purpose computation.
