It is designated as the Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald, a geopark that focuses on geology, landscape, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Geographically, the Bergstraße (Mountain Road) runs from Darmstadt to Heidelberg along the northern fringe of the Odenwald. The Odenwald is a low mountain range with varied relief, including forests, valleys, and rocky outcrops, spanning portions of Hesse, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg. The region features a relatively mild climate for its latitude, which historically allowed fruit growing and citrus cultivation on the Bergstraße and supports diverse ecosystems in the Odenwald.
