Darmstadt is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany. It lies in the southern part of the state on the northern edge of the Rhine-Main metropolitan region, roughly 30 kilometers south of Frankfurt. With around 160,000 inhabitants, it is one of the larger cities in Hesse and is a kreisfreie Stadt, meaning it is an independent city not part of a rural district.
